***This project was NOT my idea, but compiled by ideas that various teachers have posted online!!!!!!!***Rather than test my students on Pythagorean Theorem, I decided that students can use something they know all about - Instagram - to showcase their understanding.Suggestion for extending: Include a requirement for students to plot their right triangle on a coordinate plane and prove the distance formula!Once students have submitted their projects, make a wall to display Pythagoras' posts!

Connect with your students and get to know them as individuals. In this project, students use their imaginations to design a building or area (e.g., park, zoo habitat, space station, museum, sports complex) that interests them. They write about their design, draw a picture, and use their knowledge of multiplying binomials to find the area. Finally, they will display their work neatly and creatively on a poster board.

Math Test Corrections Form

Created by
Nicole Harlow
The math test corrections form allows students to reflect on their math tests. Students identify the type of mistake they made, state the mistake in their own words, and resolve the problem to find the correction solution. The "type of mistake" options are "computational" and "conceptual." Computational means the students made a mistake when performing operations in math (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, etc). Conceptual means the student did not understand the math concept.

Self-Analysis Checklist: Using Square Roots to Solve Quadratics

This checklist encourages students to play an active role in their own learning process and assessment! Make it easy for students to solve quadratic equations using the square root method. This checklist can be used in a variety of ways! If you are simply wanting to see how each student is progressing, have them fill this out at the end of class. You can also have students reference the checklist as they are practicing problems in class or at home.

Mathematics Skills Based Grading Rubric

This is the rubric I use to grade all summative assessments in classes where I am executing skills based learning. I use three categories: mathematical reasoning/communication, problem solving, and producing quality work. 45% of a student's grade is problem solving, 10% is producing quality work, and 45% is communication, but feel free to do whatever you feel works for your class. I change these percents throughout the year, depending on the unit. Communication is assessed through writing and pr

Categorizing Types of Exponents Tree Map (Zero, Negative, Positive, & Rational)

In this activity, the students draw a tree map for four types of exponents. There is a branch for zero exponents, for negative exponents, for positive exponents, and for fractional (rational) exponents. The students are to create their own expressions for each category, although the teacher may post various examples around the room. The tree map helps students see and understand the differences between the various types of exponents. The tree map helps students see the "bigger picture" in a
