Japanese Ukiyo-e Prints and Haiku Poems
A project we enjoy doing is combining Japanese Ukiyo-e prints with haiku poetry. A Ukiyo-e print is a traditional woodblock print depicting everyday life in 17th -19th century Japan. A haiku is a Japanese poem comprised of 3 lines. We like the sophistication of this project because it exposes students to greater cultural awareness and introduces them to more complex ideas and techniques, both in the visual arts and language arts.
