This is an arrangement of one of the short ballet movements from Iphigenia en Tauride by Gluck, an opera written in about 1779. The music is in D major and is in binary form. Violins and viola each have a chance to play high 3, and the first violin needs to know low 2 on E. The cello has x4 on the G string twice.

This beautiful yet simple piece is based on the concert Bb major scale. The Lonely Daffodil works well for teaching dynamics, phrasing, balance, tone matching, and overall musicality. Considerable cross scoring and limited ranges (clarinet does not cross the break and trumpet tops out and 3rd line B natural) make this piece a great choice for middle school bands.
