Students will rotate through stations with what might appear at first glance to be random artifacts. Each station has story behind it that connects the items to a story. For example, one is from a teenage sleepover where they were playing video games all night, drank a lot of soda and made a mess. You can set this simulation up in your classroom and have students rotate through each area, or, you can buy some paint sticks and string, and set up archaeological “dig sites” outside (see pic below).

Rock Cycle Dice Game Worksheet and Station Prep PDF

This game uses regular 6-sided dice to guide students through the various stages of the rock cycle.Set up the station placards around the room along with a dice (regular or the larger foam ones from places like the dollar store). Each student will need a worksheet to fill out as they go from station to station. If possible, try to put an example or two of each rock at their respective stations to have a visual there too.

Dinosaur Extinction Simulation Board Game (Google Classroom, Distance Learning)

Distance Learning Update: This game would also go GREAT over a Zoom or Google Meet session. Instead of counters, students could use cereal pieces or any small pieces to simulate the dinosaurs, and you can use a website for the dice roll. This is the perfect game to teach your class about the effects of the Meteor Impact that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. It is highly interactive and entertaining for kids, while providing meaningful content that is sure to help your students fully unders

A fun and engaging activity that introduces students to the social science of anthropology. It could also be used to teach about archaeology. In groups, students have to examine an artifact and infer information about the society from which it came. This lesson plan contains specific instructions for the teacher and a worksheet for students to record their answers. The lesson was originally created for a grade 11 class in Ontario called Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociolo

Have your students imagine that they are archaeologists in the future excavating their classroom. Select items that students will view around the room. These could be items that give students a glimpse in to your life. When viewing the items, students make inferences about you based on the item (like how archaeologists make inferences about people of the past when viewing artifacts).Resource includes a graphic organizer/ guide as well as reflection questions

ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION SIMULATION

This is a real-world simulation that I use with my 4th graders, as it goes well with our science and social studies standards--a great way to integrate! I actually have an area behind our school that I stake off, make a grid, and bury various "artifacts" for my students to find. We use tin foil grilling pans with the holes in them for sifting as well as various brushes and small garden tools for digging. I use this to also reinforce the differences between artifacts/fossils and archaeologists

The Virtual Traveler: Virtual Tours for Educators, Students & Armchair Travelers

With the demise of Google VR Creator and Google Expeditions, there is a distinct lack of virtual tours for teachers to use in the classroom. This free resource attempts in some small way to address this lack. This "Lesson Plan" is an always-updated list of virtual tours that I have created during my time as an international school teacher. No more hunting around the internet, only to find that the tour you want has vanished. The tours may be used "as is" in a lesson plan (for example, to examin
