Empire of the Sun Movie Guide

Created by

Empire of the Sun is a great story to share when discussing general warfare, World War II, refugees, English, Chinese, or Japanese History. I've included a movie guide for 3 days of viewing with 6 or 7 questions per day so if you are only watching parts of the film, you can easily omit questions. I wrote the questions while watching the movie in preparation for showing it to my classes and tried to blend straightforward with open-ended short answer questions. An answer key is also included.

This activity can be used for any world language teacher. Just adjust to your language. HGTV has one of the best resources for WL teachers with the show House Hunters International. You can go on www.hgtv.com (full episodes) to find episodes. I then have the students complete this worksheet as they watch the show. They have to use some of the vocabulary for Home (Hogar) and learn what the monetary unit is (and in some cases have to convert). I stop the episodes to point out cultural items

This is the story of her journey to learn the meaning of her name. It’s written with both prose and haiku—in “the haibun form, where short prose passages set up each haiku.” Reibstein provides backmatter and translations of 14 Japanese haiku that appear throughout the book.
