Basic Math Inventory Assessment
This is a basic math inventory assessment that I give at the beginning of the year to asses the level of my students. This assessment covers comparing and ordering numbers, place value, the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions, decimals and whole numbers. There are NO MULTIPLE CHOICE questions and word problems are worded in Common Core format.

Using Decimals in the Real World: Presidential Inauguration Activities
A good friend of mine shared this thought with me a few years ago. How can we get our students to use and understand decimals? Help them to apply what they are learning to real - world situations. Since the Presidential Election is quickly approaching, I thought I would put this practice into action.
In this activity, students will be given $1,000 in which they must use to pay for a three day - two night stay in Washington, DC in preparations for the Presidential Inauguration Activities.

Task Cards for Review of all 5.NBT standards
I use these cards with a monopoly board. Print the cards on two different colors. I also color the game board those two colors. If they land on an orange space they draw an orange card. If the student gets the answer correct they get to keep the card. If answered incorrect the student must move back to the space they were at previously. The student who collects the most cards during the game is the winner.

Place Value of Whole Numbers and Decimal Worksheet
This is a nice worksheet to do after some study has been done with both the place value of whole numbers and decimals. I usually pull my lower kids to work with in a small group while the rest of my class works on this independently. I post the answer key online for kids to check afterwards from my class website or if I feel kids are "cheating" the system and not learning/fixing mistakes on their own, I will print off a hardcopy or two to keep at my desk with me.
