Summary Stems/Graphic Organizers for Expository & Narrative Texts
Use these to help guide your students into writing summaries for narrative or expository text selections. These organizers start by helping with turning a topic into a main idea statement. This template provides a formula that students can use to master the art of writing objective summaries across the curriculum. It can be adapted to meet the needs of lower grades simply by changing the academic vocabulary verbs to one appropriate for the grade level. A rubric has been created that should be used when first introducing the structure. Once the structure is mastered, use the CCSS Explanatory or Argument Rubrics that match the PARCC, QUESTAR, and MAP assessments.
