Creating a Works Cited Page with MLA
Thanks to all the new electronic resources, MLA has added to their handbook, making numerous updates and changes. To help students learn these formats for a Works Cited (or Bibliography) page, I created three different assignments for practice. Included are instructions and answers for three different WC pages. Each one contains a variety of sources.

These have been designed for my sixth grade class but can be used with any grade 5 - 8. The idea was to improve research skills. I have a total of 35 different assignments, being sold in sets of 5. I assigned one each Monday and they were due on Friday every week. They get progressively more difficult as the year goes on, eliminating answer choices after Christmas. Library Skills Story order - Beginning, Middle, End
Read a fiction story to students or have them read one. After, let them close the book and from the their own memory write what happened at the beginning of the story, middle and end.I usually have them share to the group what they wrote and drew. After we have group discussion about it. Retelling story in the form of writing helps students to practice the fundamental of use of language and pay attention to details.

Book in a Bag Book Report!
Students in my class have done this as extra credit--but you can easily edit the document to make it an assignment. Students use the checklist to create a hands-on book report that includes title, author, setting, characters, and favorite part of the story. My 2nd grade class loved it!

Historical Fiction Book Report and Activity Sheet
Great companion to the Historical Fiction PowerPoint. Students are encouraged to check out and read books within this genre. Students then record information that will help them identify the various parts of the setting, plot and characterization that are historical in nature. Students will also have the opportunity to compare and contrast stories within the genre.

Grades 3 and up: worksheet identify parts of a book. Give the students the choice to pick a book! By teaching them how to identify parts of the book such as title, author, publisher, and copyright, will give them a step up when they need to cite a book.

Kangaroos
The student is introduced to the kangaroo via a 4-line poem about Kangaroos. The student is invited to color and spell the 9-letter word (kangaroos), to read the poem and to circle the parts of the animal and baby that are depicted in it. The last two questions encourage the student to learn more about kangaroos via the library or Google.

Give the Gift of Reading (to be done before Christmas)
A reading incentive that encourages kids to set attainable reading goals. It also encourages families to read together..... kids can get points for reading with or to family members. My favorite part is for the grand prize, kids can donate their gently used books (we gave ours to the local assistance ministry) so that other kids, who doon't have books, can fall in love with reading.
