Water Filter Experiment- packet
This experiment is great for understanding water filtration. We use 2 liter bottles with the bottom cut off. Students preplan in their groups what materials to use and how to place them in the upsidedown 2 liter. Once the prepare their "filtration system", I pour dirty water in and we collect it (glass baby food jars work great because you can see inside) out of the small opening at the bottom. Building Blocks Handout for Five Paragraph Essay Writing
This handout lays out the Building Blocks of 5 Paragraph Essay Writing. There is a block for each paragraph, and inside each block are the details that should be included in that particular paragraph of the essay.
For example, the first block is titled: Paragraph #1: Introduction. It notes that the introduction should include an attention grabbing sentence, background information on the topic and the thesis statement. The second block discusses the first body paragraph and so on.

On Demand Writing Peer Conferences
This document allows student to use the Rally Coach Kagan structure to conduct peer conferences using each aspect of the on demand writing rubric.

You can break your students into teams and give them a set of codes to program the teacher or a group member through a maze. I used masking tape and created a maze throughout the lab. I have taken a creative approach in dealing with this by integrating the topic into a creative writing assignment that satisfies the common core standard of argumentative/persuasive writing.
