I have created a compilation of lyrics from the classic songs from "Schoolhouse Rocks America" videos. Mnemonic learning has proven to not only help retention of information but also provide a fun learning activity for both students and teachers. The Schoolhouse Rock videos have given almost 50 years of unforgettable songs and cartoons that stay with the audience for decades longer than most lessons provided in classrooms today. As a student, I utilized them repeatedly in school to remember gram

Roles of the President Song

I created a mnemonic to help my students memorize the roles of the president. I then put this mnemonic into the form of a Middle Eastern-style rap song. Here is the mnemonic: The "Commander in Chief SCALPED ME" It stands for: Commander in Chief S-tate (Chief of) C-itizen (Chief) A-dministrator (Chief) L-egislator (Chief) P-arty (Chief of) E-xecutive (Chief) D-iplomat (Chief) M-anager of the E-conomy (single role) My students enjoyed the song, and a few even

Gettysburg Address Rap Video! - Distance Learning

For distance learning, here's a fun video you can show your students in your U.S. History class as they learn about Abraham Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address. It is a short (2:07), stop-motion cartoon video that could work as an introduction to a lesson, a station in a rotation or as homework (or just for fun). It is available 24/7 on my YouTube channel (Keith Piirto) or just scan the code. I have also uploaded on my TPT store site a PDF of the Gettysburg Address Recital assignment I give to

This is a MUST for any GOVERNMENT teacher. I had my students memorize the song in middle school and they come back and consistently tell me they still remember the song in high school and college and that it really helps!!! Print out three pages of preview to get copy of lyrics, and a written activity with key. There is an AWFUL, but memorably AWFUL recording to go along with the PPT.

Lawmaking Process at the National Level

In December we started teaching the process by which a bill becomes a law at the national level. Because it was close to the holidays I thought it would put the process to music. I ended up with "Joy to the World! A Bill has Come!" It was fun to watch the students take the test and hear them humming the song so they would get the answer correct. They can even change a few words around and have it work for the state lawmaking process as well.
