This assignment allows students to draw, label, and reflect on a special place. I used this with HOUSE ON MANGO STREET, but it could be used for many literary works. This assignment can result in a personal narrative, an expository piece, or a persuasive piece (especially helpful for the STAAR EOC). I use this activity as an introduction to Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." Before I assign the story, I give students the scenario on this handout, which asks them to debate the idea of personal freedoms versus the common good.
