Two-Step Equations Magic Square
The attached activity is a 5x5 magic square that requires students to solve two-step algebraic equations. When solved correctly, each row and column will add up to the number 65. In my teaching experiences, I have found that students are more motivated to solve magic squares over traditional worksheets because there is a final "solution" similar to a Sudoku puzzle.

The Brother/Sister Principle - Storytelling in 6th grade math
Students enjoy hearing stories. If it's a story that they can identify with, they enjoy it even more. This is a story I use with my 6th grade math class to help them remember the procedure used to find equivalent fractions. After students understand the concept as it relates to fractions, you can use it again when it's time to solve for variables and keep things "fair" on both sides of the equation.
