At the beginning of the play, King Wenceslas is a mean, selfish and greedy king. All he cares about is money. He has a conversion at seeing a newborn baby born in his stables. After setting eyes on the baby he changes from his cruel, stone-hearted ways into a heart of flesh. He becomes a good, kind, unselfish, and generous king. This then sets the scene for the story in the traditional Christmas Carol “Good King Wenceslas”. This play can be performed by 8–14-year-old students.

With 24 hours to go, this Nativity has all the signs of being a total disaster. Can Mr Brown pull it back from the brink? Can he prevent the head teacher from finding out the horrible truth? This is a whole school Christmas play that brings together the fictional Santa Claus and the true meaning of Christmas. Elves set the stage and carry the play as the grades filter on and off stage sing songs that go with the play. An out of sort’s elf (Giggles) is disillusioned with Christmas. All the other elves try to cheer him up by telling jokes and playing Christmas music, but nothing seems to be working until Santa sits all the elves down to teach them about the real meaning of Christmas.

It remains the only time I held tryouts and presented as a school-wide effort (the remainder of my plays were classroom productions). As usual, the students had ideas and we introduced a lot of technical aspects, as well as props, including a working door for Jacob Marley to burst through in a cloud of baby powder! The first Ghost who visits Scrooge is obnoxious; the second is a ValleyGirl
