Compare and Contrast Two Works of Art
This one page handout has students compare two different paintings of the same subject, "Washington Crossing the Delaware". There are sentence frames that support the writing for English Language Learners. It is a good tool to get students to notice/practice describing artistic style and to use details from the art to support their statements. These two paintings are good discussion starters for a history lesson as well in regards to slavery.

Scientific Revolution Postage Stamps
I looked everywhere for a Scientific Revolution project for my 9th graders that would take a really long time but still forced them to do some research. I used this in combination with blendspace.com to help introduce the students to research. I made them write down their sources to introduce a level of accountability.

Have students analyze primary sources. I usually use this for looking at pictures in history, political cartoons, and paintings. Examples I use this for are Migrant Mother, Washington crossing the Delaware, propaganda used during wars. It sets up students curiosity and can be used to preview a topic or unit.
