McCarthyism and The Salem Witch Trials/ The Crucible- Webquest
This webquest is designed to give students background information relating to the concepts of McCarthyism and the Salem Witch Trials. I utilized this lesson prior to beginning to read "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. It requires students to read several articles, complete Cornell notes and a graphic organizer , which are included. Teachers can use a student discussion (fish bowl, Socratic Seminar) following this activity as a formal assessment.

The Outsiders - The 1960s background research project
Students use these directions to conduct a research project on some aspect of 1960s culture to get a better understanding of the setting of The Outsiders. Topics include music, trends, etc. Guidelines are geared toward a PowerPoint presentation, but could easily be adapted for a paper. Includes guidelines for five groups, a listening sheet for students to record what they learn during the presentations, and an alternate assignment.

Jeanette Walls' The Glass Castle is a memoir used in many classrooms, and rightfully so. It's a rich text that gives great insight into what it's like living in poverty.
