Short Research Project
This is a research project which takes about one week of class time to complete. It requires the student to complete an interview about his/her name (hopefully with a parent or guardian) and then research information from a "name book" and from a website. Freak the Mighty Research Brochure
This product can be used either during or after a unit over the novel, Freak the Mighty. Students pick one of the five related topics and create a six-panel research brochure about their findings. This could be accompanied with some additional instruction on research basics and citation. Grading checklist/rubric included!
Flush by Carl Hiaasen Argumentative Writing Activity
This is an argumentative writing project that pairs with the novel Flush by Carl Hiaasen. Students must use scientific and legal evidence to support the innocence of their character in the local newspaper. It is written from the POV of a character. It should be graded with the FSA rubric (or your state writing rubric) and is formatted to match an FSA prompt, but without the provided research sources. Students will be completing their research independently.

Students are required to meet short-term deadlines before the long-term due dates and need a parent signature to show that they are meeting those deadlines!
