Using any size grid paper, students choose a perimeter and draw all the rectangles they can with their chosen perimeter. Students use an appropriate equation to calculate the area. Students color/cut/paste the examples to construction paper. Finally, student write a paragraph about the relationship between the shape of the rectangle and the area.

This PBL allows students to create their own vacation/boarding building for animals. Students are required to design a building, including all areas needed to board animals. They then find the area and perimeter of each location, create a presentation and present to the class. There is a rubric included, however teachers will need to provide graph paper (teacher can choose the size, to allow students of all levels to participate).
