In this project, students apply what they know about right triangle trigonometry to estimate the height of a tall object on campus. They create their own clinometer and use it to collect data. Students love getting outside to collect data, and they love working with a real-life application of these concepts! Please download the preview file for information about supplies (string, straws, and coins) and setup. You will download a .zip file from which two files (one .doc and one .xls) can be e

Crop Circles -- Unit Circle, Radian and Degree - 21st Century Math Project

At dusk, it … happens. Crop Circles have become a pastime of sorts around the world. Originally considered to be the work of aliens, they’ve baffled millions with their elaborate designs and timeliness of their work. With knowledge of the unit circle, radians and degrees students will be able to construct these masterpieces in short order. In this 21st Century Math Project, you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, 3 assignments and one pro

Need a real world application to show students how useful inverses of sin, cosine, and tangent are? In this activity, students find missing angles in furniture construction designs using trig! The set includes 6 drawings with a total of 21 missing angles. Students will use their knowledge of trig ratios, inverses, and angle relationships (such as parallel lines cut by a transversal and complementary angles). Two versions are included:Large drawings showing each design on its own sheet One she

Trigonometric Functions Project Architecture Real World Trigonometry

Apply trigonometric functions to the real-world of architecture with this mini-project. In this student-tested and approved project, students design the front of a building using different roof styles. Students determine the use of the building, draw scale drawings, and use trigonometric functions to determine roof heights and lengths. This product is appropriate for students who are relatively new to applying trigonometric functions to problems and was originally used by Algebra 2 students.

The purpose of the Quadrilateral Kite Experiment is to allow students to explore the characteristics of a quadratic kite and use those properties for flight. Students will construct a kite using wooden dowels, a plastic bag, and some string. They will conduct an experimental flight, recording their data and results. Students will then reflect on their results and the qualities of a quadratic kite that make it the choice shape for flight. They will then examine the results of others. Students wi

I like to call this activity Putt-Putt-Geometry. It is 9 glorious holes of trigonometry application! This works great as a Trig unit project, end of year project, or test review (maybe 1 or 2 holes for review). The students can work in groups, pairs, or individuals. If your students are not proficient with Trig, or you have not covered it yet, each hole can be done using the Pythagorean Theorem instead - simply tweak the directions a bit. I hope your students enjoy this as much as mine do!
