TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I'm Melissa Rose. I have been a high school social studies teacher in Reno, Nevada for six years. The courses I have taught here are world history, U.S. history, AP geography, and government.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching philosophy is simple, I have high expectations for each of my students and am here to provide differentiated support to assure their growth. I believe that student engagement is paramount and I achieve that by facilitating collaboration, creativity, and a little competition in the classroom. I am a huge proponent of project based learning and love to see students produce an original piece of work they are proud of.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

While not teaching, I participate in the Parent Teacher Home Visit Team, serve as a Washoe Teachers Association Building Rep and serve on the WEA government relations committe. I am on the school improvement and accredidaton team and the MTSS team.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Born in Washington state and raised in rural northern Nevada, I attended UNR and Great Basin College, graduating in 2009 with a BA in secondary education with a minor in history. I then earned my M.A. in educational leadership and hope to be accepted into the UNR Ed.D in Educational Leadership Program where I will continue to study what I am passionate about; closing the achievement gap and assuring equity in our public schools.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

When not in the classroom learning or teaching, you might find me hiking or backpacking throughout Sierra Nevada or cozied up reading a book or writing a short story.
