MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching method for learning is a student-centered approach, working to accommodate the different learning styles that gain effective outcomes. I strive to incorporate a blend of audio (i.e. lesson), visual (i.e. presentation), and kinesthetics (i.e. hands-on activity) materials and activity components in every lesson. I also incorporate front-loading, scaffolding and closure activities to enhance the learning experience for students, leading to a mastery of the concepts.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have had students' works recognized in the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards. I enjoyed helping many of my high school art students build their portfolios, leading to them earning scholarships. I co-wrote and received a $5,000 grant from the Indiana Arts Commision. I was awarded a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago in my senior year in high school. My works have been chosen for exhibit in venues including the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art and Huntington University.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Ball State University Fine Arts and continuing Ed courses; Trine University Education B.S.; Indiana Wesleyan Visual Arts Education; Indiana Purdue University Fort Wayne continuing Ed courses, Kindergarten Endorsement and Master of Arts in Liberal Studies

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I became a teacher because I did not like school, and I wanted to create a classroom environment that cultivated engagement and enthusiasm in learning for all students. I have enjoyed a life of diverse educator experiences fostered by many moves our family of six experienced as my husband climbed the corporate ladder. After retiring from public education in 2021, I was approached to teach art part-time for grades K-8 at a private Lutheran school. It has been a glorious experience.
