I am a passionate reading intervention teacher, who has been blessed with the opportunity to work with students with severe learning disabilities for the majority of my 20 year career. I willingly admit to reading every possible article, book, and text on reading and am blessed with a brilliant, diverse, and inspiring group of colleagues who challenge me to learn everything I can.
I believe in hands on, multisensory learning where students are provided with choices, engage in complex activities, and learn from assessments. In support settings where students are focusing on systematic phonics, direct instruction on decoding and comprehension reading strategies, and so on, it is vital to engage students' creative minds so that their learning is memorable. That is why my approach blends the systematic with the messy. Kid selected projects, such as making goo to learn /oo/ or fake snow for /ow/ regularly overtake my space, leaving me covered with a variety of glue, flour, and baking soda. As I say to my own children, a good day, is a messy day!
