I received both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in African American Studies and History (University of Virginia), and Africana Studies (Cornell University). Teaching Experience: I have taught at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. My Courses included "Race & Ethnicity in America," and "A Survey of African American History" Curriculum Experience: I have developed a "teach and learn" black history curriculum from the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade to the Post-Civil Rights or "Obama Era". My curriculum is developed for educators and students in high school through college. The curriculum contains almost 80% of primary source documents and there are "Teaching Guides" for each reading assignment and Lesson Plan. All of the reading material is provided with the purchase of the curriculum, no additional materials needed except a computer and internet access.
I am a college professor so my basic teaching style is lecture/discussion. However, I break up the monotony by having debates on controversial issues in history, student independent research and student lectures (role reversal). I also like to use almost all primary source material to make history real, and to allow individuals to tell their own story as opposed to having others tell it for them.
