Description

Ever wonder where the terms coon, pickaninny, mammy, and Sambo come from? Through this free class you will learn the historical context in which these terms were created, and see how these stereotypes made their way into American pop culture via Minstrel Shows, racists caricatures and advertisements, the public school classroom, and even cartoons! How did these stereotypes affect Black people? How did they affect White people? Are these stereotypes of African Americans still prevalent in society? In this free class you will explore these questions and more! The class features a short documentary, dozens of images of these stereotypes as found throughout pop culture, videos of Minstrel Shows, and more!
