I spent 16 years in the classroom and then switched to coaching math. I coached for 3 years in a K-8 building and 1 year in a middle school. I then moved to a math curriculum coordinator position where I handled a variety of levels over the years. All of these years have been in a large urban district with a large low-income population. We saw growth under my leadership in both middle and elementary school. When I handled middle school math at the district level, the building level ISAT scores went up every year with an average building gain of 32.2 points over the 6 years I handled middle school. At the elementary level, I lead the district through the transition to Common Core with a focus on building depth of understanding and movement away from teaching to get answers. The data went from meeting or exceeding 6 out of 22 Illinois districts (similar in size and low income) to 16 out of 22 districts.
I am very conceptual in my approach to mathematics. I believe in classroom discussion and building depth of understanding. I believe strong questioning of students can lead to better understanding for all. I love group work to support student to student thinking and discourse. I love using manipulatives in the classroom.
