Over a 5-yr period, while working with over 350 teachers in 10 districts, a common request from her teachers was that students had difficulty with Elapsed Time. She discovered that while children often know how to DO Math, they demonstrate that they do not conceptually understand why. She owns the patent for Math Track and Time Pieces, manipulatives for modeling Elapsed Time and has now discovered over 100 K-5 standards that can be modeled on the Math Track (open number line).

Deeper Level Questioning is a basic ingredient to teaching Math for conceptual understanding. With a few simple shifts in one's teaching practices, you will know whether your students conceptually understand the mathematics presented or whether they are just "going through the motions" to get the right answer.
