Description
After studying about the Scientific Method, what could be better than a relevant lab where students have to make measurements, collect data, average results, and analyze their findings? In other words, put it all into practice with this virtual pendulum activity.
It’s virtual… no lab equipment is needed… only a computer and an internet connection. Of course, if you choose not to use the Easel feature because you prefer paper & pencil, you can still run off copies of the student pages. No problem!
What’s inside?
Overview: Students, after answering background and research questions, will access a short video that will show them how to set up the simulation. A link to the simulation will allow them to conduct the lab and gather data. The lab follows the usual scientific method format.
Students will:
- research to understand how a pendulum works
- construct a hypothesis based on an independent variable involving a pendulum
- identify independent, dependent, & constant variables
- make multiple trial measurements based on the independent variable
- average results
- use results to validate or reject their hypothesis by answering a series of questions
Uses:
lesson follow-up, review, or checkup
a unit lab or part of unit lab series
assessment activity
simple & fun science activity
and more
Features you can’t help but :
✔ a unique method to check understanding of the scientific method principles
✔ no lab equipment is needed… It’s Virtual!
✔ students are engaged and focused
✔ students learn by doing
More Details:
Students will need a computer and internet access. You choose a paper-pencil or Easel format… whichever works best for you and your students. Regardless, you can assess a student's ability to conduct a scientific experiment, gather data, and analyze and draw conclusions.
Being an internet activity, it is suitable for distance learning too.
Suitable for students grades 6-9.
