Description

DIGITAL OR HANDS ON EXPLORATION OF METAPHORS AND SIMILES IN DANIEL KEYES' SHORT STORY "FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON." NOW Revised to include directions and compatibility for distance learning through Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams.

Students will work through four locks in this to escape the metaphor maze in a 25 minute time period. This escape room will not only review some key concepts in the short story, but also ask students to identify and analyze the author's use of simile and metaphor within the text.

This escape room is common core aligned, student friendly, and requires minimal teacher preparation. Just give the students the URL and let the fun begin or print out the four parts (one page each) for each group. Complete with teacher tips, a student lock handout, and "I escaped" certificate.

Part 1: Identify the comparisons made in 4 metaphors/similes from "Flowers..."

Part 2: Unscramble the word connected to the metaphors/similes.

This resource requires use of YouTube and Google forms, but additional links are provided at the bottom of each page to troubleshoot situations with wireless connectivity. You can share the link with students through Google Classroom or just give students the direct URL to type in. There is also a print version where students will only need minimal access to the Internet for the locks page and video in Part 4 (this can be done with cell phones.)

The escape room has been tested on Mac, PC, and Google ChromeBook. Please check your District's firewall for use of YouTube and Google forms prior to purchasing this product.
