    INFORMATIONAL TEXT FEATURES ESCAPE ROOM:

    Students will work through five locks in this escape room to find the missing reporter, Bill Ancina, and uncover the conspiracy that he has unearthed. Check out the preview video for a tour of the escape room. This escape room is common core aligned, student friendly, and requires minimal teacher preparation. Just give the students the URL and let the fun begin. Complete with teacher tips and a student lock handout, students will only need the supports in the website and no additional readings; however, prior knowledge with identifying and analyzing informational text features is a bonus.

    This resource includes:

    5 interactive parts

    Part 1: Identify informational text features from illustrative examples

    Part 2: Evaluate the author's purpose behind using specific informational text features

    Part 3: Decode the cipher using the passcode from Part 2

    Part 4: A multiple choice test about author's purpose with a video, graph, & newspaper

    Part 5: Read the newspaper and use the circled letters to unscramble the final lock

    ROBOT DREAMS TASK CARDS:

    This is not your typical task card resource. Complete with multiple versions of the student response sheet, these 6 tasks cards are versatile for many distance learning and classroom situations. The task cards will walk students through objective versus subjective summary, informational text (video) comparison, depth of knowledge question creation, theme comparison with a short film, US constitution comparison, and a hexagonal thinking activity.

    The prompts are organized in the following tasks:

    • Read the story: The full text is embedded in the website
    • Summative vs. Objective Summary: Write 2 summaries with graphic organizer support
    • Informational Text Comparison: Synthesize dream science with the story
    • Depth of Knowledge Questions Creation & Answer: Roll the dice, use the DOK chart, and create quality questions
    • Short Film Comparison: Watch a short film containing similar themes and evaluate themes in literature and our lives

    FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON METAPHOR MAZE ESCAPE ROOM:

    Students will work through four locks in this to escape the metaphor maze in a 25 minute time period. This escape room will not only review some key concepts in the short story, but also ask students to identify and analyze the author's use of simile and metaphor within the text.

    This resource includes:

    4 interactive parts

    Part 1: Identify the comparisons made in 4 metaphors/similes from "Flowers..."

    Part 2: Unscramble the word connected to the metaphors/similes.

    Part 3: Analyze Daniel Keyes' reasoning behind metaphors about locks & doors.

    Part 4: Watch clips of "Flowers for Algernon" & connect them with metaphors/similes from in the text.

    OPEN WINDOW ESCAPE ROOM:

    Mr. Nuttel has shown up at your house, claiming to be a lost relative that has never been mentioned. Armed with a fake letter from his sister, Lady Stapleton, he claims to need help curing his nerves. Little does he know that you have been writing Lady Stapleton since you were a child using secret codes. By the end off the day, can you keep Mr. Nuttle away? Students will work through four locks in this escape room, compare two video versions of the story, and answer a mastery test at the end while using the text. This escape room is common core aligned, student friendly, and requires minimal teacher preparation.

    All of these resources requires use of YouTube and Google forms/docs. You can share the link with students through Google Classroom/Microsoft Teams or just give students the direct URL to type in. They have been tested on Mac, PC, and Google ChromeBook.
