How to use this Movie Trailer Project:
This book trailer project can be used for any independent novel study, whole-class novel, or even as a final assessment for literature circles! Use this end-of-the-year project as a creative alternative to standardized testing for assessment of comprehension and higher-level thinking. The resources provided with this project are suitable for online learning with digital worksheets for Google Classroom®.
You can introduce this end-of-the-year project by reading through the Book Trailer Project Outline with your students. This handout provides instructions and expectations for their movie trailer, including a recommended trailer length and literary analysis prompts. To edit these assignment instructions, use the Canva® template included.
This outline also includes a reflective writing assignment that will prompt students to provide an independent literary analysis. This individual writing assignment will assess students’ understanding of characterization, conflict, and critical reviews of the novel.
The Book Trailer Rubric included with this project outline is provided in both editable and ready-to-print formats. After introducing the assignment expectations, you can introduce the 4-level rubric so that students are able to see how they will be assessed for this project. To edit this rubric, make a copy of the editable Google Doc® file using the instructions provided.
You can then show students the Book Trailer Student Example so that they can engage with expectations on a visual level.
To help with planning, assign students the Student Planner and Task Checklist and the Book Trailer Storyboard Graphic Organizer. These resources will support students in establishing deadlines and remaining on track to turn in their book trailer project on time. These graphic organizers will also help students plan the resources needed for filming their book trailer.
This book trailer project also includes a Peer- and Self-Evaluation Form. Students should understand that they will be responsible for reflecting on their work, as well as the work of their group mates. This will support you in evaluating each student collectively and independently.
⭒ For classrooms utilizing Google Classroom® ⭒
To access the digital version of these worksheets, simply follow the instructions within the resource to copy the files directly to your Google Drive®.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Extremely satisfied
This was such a great resource to use with my sophomores in English class. Often times, book reports are the go-to for book projects, and this is such a creative alternative to doing a traditional book report. My students were able to show the whole class what their book was like and bring it to life and it was an enjoyable project for all of them. It comes with simple but effective instructions, handouts, and a rubric so they know what you, the teacher, will be looking for.

I used this with my Grade 8 students. At first I thought that creating a trailer that was 5-7 minutes long would be too involved, but they rose to the challenge and produced professional book trailers. They loved the process and really had to think critically about how to analyze characters and conflict in captivating ways. Thanks for this great resource.

We had a blast with this. We used it for a whole-class novel and my students could not get enough of their classmates' portrayals of each character. The reflection activity was a great way to round out this assignment and evaluate students' understanding of the novel.
