4th and 5th grade teachers!

You will not regret this purchase. I have compiled 5 different literary essays for the Literary Essay units based on Teachers College. Two of them are written by me and three of them are written by students I had. Literary essays can focus on a character and a trait they have or an overall theme/message of a story.

The books that go along with these essays are

- Fox by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks

- Malala’s Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai

- Slower Than The Rest by Cynthia Rylant

- Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting

- A Different Pond by Bao Phi

The first 2 pages are a graphic organizer I created to guide students in how to create a literary essay and what should go into each paragraph, including transition words.

Each part of an essay is color coded. The thesis or claims are written in bold red. Elaboration phrases are highlighted in yellow. The title of stories are underlined and the authors names are included in the essay. Essays start by asking the reader a question and leaving them something to think about at the end.

You can use these are your teaching models and give to students as a reference guide. It can be uploaded to a google classroom folder for them to look at and study as mentor texts.

I hope you find this resource helpful for you and your students. This is my personal favorite unit of the year and as a teacher, I was super proud of my students’ work at the end of the unit when they published their essays. Enjoy and have a great year!
