The Literary Essay Must Haves - 4th and 5th Grade

As per the Chancellor, the TC curriculum will slowly be removed across NYC public schools and districts are going to choose another curriculum or program for their schools from one of the 3 approved by the Chancellor and his colleagues. Many schools will drop TC starting in the fall of 2023 and many already have. Please use this resource as an extra guide or support tool if you are teaching something similar to this unit, that aligns with the new curriculum your district is following. Use at your own risk, but I will sell TC products at lower prices.

4th and 5th grade teachers,

If you teach students the literary essay units from Teachers College, these are some very helpful tools for you and your students to have throughout the unit. They can keep copies of these in their writing folder or you can have these in your writing center.

- Literary Essay Bookmark: black and white, color, English and Spanish versions

- Literary Essay Graphic Organizer: English and Spanish

- Literary Essay Teacher made Rubric (condensed from TC and has similar categories from TC rubric)

- Literary Essay Models: color coded essays, based on short stories, 5 in total (can be used as your models or have students study the essays to see what made it great writing and what they may want to try in their own writing)

*You can find PDF copies for some of these texts online for free! Students should always have a copy of the text they will use for the essay because they will need it for details and evidence.
