Scipio Africanus Jones was born a slave, but became a lawyer who led a case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, but he did not get to go, which would have made him the first African American lawyer at the highest court. His case did bring a change to the interpretation of the 14th Amendment, giving African Americans more rights. The lessons about Scipio are written on three levels, from upper elementary through high school. The teacher should look at all levels to see which is appropriate.
