Introduction
I made this exercise to encourage improved math operation calculation speed for first graders (specifically my daughter). It should be used after children are already comfortable with addition at a slower pace. I branded this activity an event in the Math Olympics to make it a fun challenge for kids.

Bar Model Practice with Story Problems - Addition
This set of bar models contains 6 pages of story problems using the bar model, or part-part total, method for addition with each page being more difficult than the last. For younger children you could display the sheets via projector (smart board, etc.) and complete as a teacher-led group activity, while older children can complete independently.

The Logical Counting Grid
The Logical Counting Grid begins with 0 at the bottom, then moves up the page as the numbers get larger, up to 100. The font actually gets larger as well. This is a logical counting grid since, as one counts up or adds, the logical direction to move is UP! Conversely, as we count backward or subtract, the logical direction to move is DOWN.
Since we teach students to add columns of numbers by starting at the right and moving left (opposite of how we read), we can easily teach them the proper way
