Thoughtfulness speech - National Honor Society

I presented this speech as a guest speaker at a National Honor Society induction. This speech deals with the topic of thoughtfulness, both in being an intentional thinker as well as considerate. This speech can be used in a classroom to inspire students and as character education. This speech can also be utilized by leaders trying to unify a team or group, by simply replacing a few words to address the appropriate crowd. I am VERY proud of this piece, and think you will love it as well!

RACE writing ~ How to Construct a Response to Short Answer Questions

COMMON CORE requires students to construct complete answers to questions. To this end, many teachers are instructing the RACE method of answering state assessment prompts to help students come up with reasoned and complete answers. Our district requires that this method be explicitly taught to all students for written and oral responses throughout the year. This POWERPOINT details the steps involved in introducing and teaching this tool to staff, teachers, and students.

I am a huge fan of Lucy Calkins and have taken three courses that explored her Readers/Writer's Workshop principles and I've been doing WW and RW for about five years now. I recently reviewed her latest CCSS materials and our school purchased them as they were fantastic. I'm not making any money on this Powerpoint, I just did a PD (Professional Development) for my school on the elements of WW (I did a mini-lesson which is not included) but it was more background information on what the purpose

The school newspaper: what a wonderful avenue to promote student engagement, build a link between school and home, teach students about types of writing, study these and practice and perfect these, especially expository or writing for the purpose of teaching or informing! Expository writing is essential for college or career training and what better way for students to really understand expository writing (informational nonfiction!) than by reading while researching and writing their own and t

SAVE YOUR SCHOOL SAVE YOURSELF

Three (3) Colorado Middle School students arrived at their school, on Friday, April 10, 2015, with LOADED GUNS and a smoke device. Despite April being the nation's traditional month when weapons and violent acts increase on school campuses, we ought not to accept that FACTUAL OBSCENITY as a permanent tradition. Instead, we ought to rise up and TEACH students that they themselves are the best MANAGERS of their own SAFETY. They can become the LEADERS in this vital area, which is just as important

Informative Essay Questionnaire

The questionnaire was designed to help students see how an informative piece of writing should be set-up and what each paragraph should include. It's also a great tool to use after students are comfortable with informative writing formats and to have them grade each other's informative writing pieces. They also are more likely to realize their own mistakes as they have to think about the items that should be included in each paragraph.

This is a 27 slide PowerPoint that I created when I was involved in the Eastern Virginia Writing Project at William & Mary. It essentially discusses what is meant by "informal writing", why it is important to practice in the classroom, and goes on to give examples of types of informal writing. This PowerPoint could be used to explain informal writing to students, to use in a presentation to colleagues, or for one's own general knowledge. I am listing this FREE so feel free to use and modify
