Students are assigned a country in Latin America as a wrap-up for the social studies unit. I gave them their countries early in the unit so they could jot down notes throughout, but we spent several weeks leading up to the due date doing research. I gave them a research goal each day, and they submitted their notes and a paragraph summary (to later become the database entry) to me on Google Classroom.
