3rd Grade Science: Structures, Processes, and Interactions of Organisms

This unit engages students in inquiry-based activities to help them gain a conceptual understanding of life cycles, animals benefits from living in groups, adaptations and natural selection. Many opportunities for data collection and analysis are embedded in the mini unit allowing teachers to integrate math standards. This Unit was designed to address these NGSS Science Standards for 3rd grade:3-LS1-1. Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles, but all have

Science Fair time means lot of questions from parents and students! These tools I've created will help to put you, your students, and your parents at ease by showing how to organize a successful science fair project! You will be able to use these handouts year after year!! You will get a four page handout to give your students/parents that gives detailed page by page directions on how to organize the project notebook. The project notebook explains how to set up the report which includes the

Snow Science! How Dense is Our Snow? A Hands On Science Experiment.

When the snow starts falling, students love to play around in it. Here is a science experiment that ties in their love of snow with learning! This Science Experiment measures the amount of liquid in snow and leads to a discussion on density. I tie this experiment to an introduction to our fractions unit in math. Even in 5th grade students need a reminder that fractions are a part of a whole. They will also get to see a real world example of when fractions, graphs, and line plots are used to help

ENERGY BOUNCEStudents are challenged to investigate potential and kinetic energy as they look for patterns in the way a ball bounces. Collect data. Analyze data. Make decisions using data. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS1. What is the difference in kinetic and potential energy?2. What are some examples of energy transversions?Potential energy is energy that is stored in an object. If you stretch a rubber band, you will give it potential energy. As the rubber band is released, potential energy is changed to

Experiment Lab Report - Grades 3&4

I developed this resource as part of a multi-age science class taught for home school students. The students kept a lab journal (I would usually make copies of the procedures and they would glue them in their journals, until their writing skills improved) and would write down observations and conclusions as we worked. I encouraged them to draw diagrams of the experiments. In this project, students pick ONE of the labs we did in a unit and write up a "formal" lab report. The zip file includes:
