Cargo Boat Engineering Bundle: Budget and Calculating Area STEM Challenges

In this engineering design STEM challenge, students will use & apply science and math concepts to their cargo boat design. This simple, yet complex, engineering design challenge will task students to build an aluminum foil boat that can hold the most amount of cargo/mass (pennies) possible. In the first challenge, there is a constraint of the amount of aluminum foil students can use, therefore, they will have to calculate the area of a rectangular piece of foil that they choose to use to ma

This project is a great way to introduce measuring with students of all ages. You can do basic measuring with K-1 with a ruler using inches and centimeters. Then increase the expectation with 2-6 using area and perimeter. If you want, you can even include volume depending on your students. Either way you implement, it is sure to be an engaging activity that students will love!!

Students will be able to design a blueprint for a home with rooms and a yard on grid paper (grid paper not included). Students can record the length and width for each room/yard on the chart and then calculate perimeter and area for each. Also included is the rubric which scores each item from 0-3. This is easily adaptable for different skill levels (can give students a pre-drawn shape to then divide into rooms, such as a rectangle or square OR challenge students by making the shape more diffic
