This is a great hands on project for the class that likes to keep active. The students will be given a bag of M&M's and make some predictions. Then data will be collected. Students will then find MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE, THE LOWER QUARTILE, THE UPPER QUARTILE, RANGE, INTERQUARTILE RANGE. Then the students will construct a box and whisker plot with the data. This handout explains how to use the reduced row echelon form (RREF) function in the TI-83/84 to solve system of equations problems. It also includes an explanation of the Gauss-Jordan Elimination Method upon which the function is based. The handout includes pictures to show the proper buttons that must be selected to properly use the function. It also includes an explanation of how to interpret the results.

This is a lab that I have used for years to teach my students about exponential functions. It is quite large, and I usually assign it as a major project. If a student can work through the entire lab on his or her own, that student should have no problems with the unit test. I touch on applications from biology, economics, and chemistry; so that the subject doesn't seem like a dry mathematical topic.

Algebra Functions by Hand
Teach your students how to graph functions without a calculator. Using a basic y=mx+b format, give some x values in a table, have the students calculate the y value, convert to order pairs (O.P.). Finally, they graph their points and voila! A function is born! Also include is basic translation, reflection, and identification of O.P., and values of b, m, and y from a graph.
