I taught middle and high school social studies for 18 years, during which time I also taught expository, academic writing. This was a really handy tool. This project is an informational topic, research writing assignment I used in a gifted fourth grade classroom. Students choose their own topic and write a four paragraph essay followed by a speech to the class about their topic. It is in a Word document so that you can change the due dates to tailor this to your classroom.

Essay Structure Outlining - Using all 5 senses! (Pineapple Approach)
When was the last time you tasted a lesson?? This is the ONLY total sensory approach to structuring an essay. There are two main problems facing most students writers today. First of all, too many write their entire essay in the introduction and then merely repeat themselves in the body! Introductory Paper- State of the Nation
I Use this with my 12th grade AP Economics classes usually the first week of school.This would also work great with any AP or Honors Government or Civics class.Great tool to bring up some good discussions for an icebreaker activity.
