Song of Roland: Presentation of Select Portions of the Epic
This unit covers basic information about the early Middle Ages. Activities include research assignments and creative writing. Students present groups of Laisses as sportscasters calling a football game, a 60 Minutes newscast, a comic book, and a funeral eulogy. Narrative Assignment--The Mysteries of Harris Burdick Photos
This is a great entrance or assessment activity to see how well students are utilizing standards in their narrative writing. I have a Google Doc assignment version and a handwritten assignment version attached. I also attached the rubric I would utilize to grade and give feedback to student work. This was a great activity to help students visualize narrative element standards in their writing along with the freedom to use their own creativity!

Is Odysseus an Epic Hero? Essay Assignment
I use this assignment with my 9th grade students after reading the Odyssey. We discuss the qualities of an epic hero (included in assignment) and then look for examples from the text to determine whether or not Odysseus shows the characteristics of an epic hero. The students then use the included graphic organizer to plan their essay. This is a good assignment to help students analyze a character and to use the text to support their point of view. I've also included a rubric for grading.

READY PLAYER ONE~ CREATE YOUR OWN AVATAR PROJECT**UPDATED 2023**
Students create their own avatar online and write a reflection piece to accompany the reading of the novel Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.We have 90 minute blocks and this took the entire time.
