Brave New World Powerpoint: Satire, BNW, Dowd's editorial and allusions

This was one of my best lessons on Brave New World. It deals with satire and provides a description of satire and its characteristics. Students are given a handout of Maureen Dowd's editorial on Ted Cruz (still timely) on Oct. 6, 2013 and are asked to read, respond, circle allusions, and comment on why this is such an effective satire. Connections are made with Brave New World. Auden's poem also included as satire.

HAMLET: Let's sing ... 2 songs: Thanks to Simon and Garfunkel and HAIR

Changing the pace is always fun. To continue the FUN of Hamlet, these two songs get students involved and show them how well-known Shakespeare's play is.
#1: Original lyrics put to the tune of S & G's "Cecilia". Put on Smartboard, upload the background music or song, print out the new lyrics and have students sing. This is to be at the end of Act 2 when Ophelia thinks Hamlet is mad and isn't there for him.

Importance of Being Earnest: Acting Out the Cat Fight (Act 2)

Twilight Guided Theme Essay for the Novel
Students will learn how to identify theme, examples from Lord of the FLies are given, these can easily be modified by teacher if they are not familiar with this famous novel. Students will learn how to identify subject and theme and write statements of theme. In this lesson, students will brainstorm together subjects and themes of the novel, and create their own statement of theme. Great Gatsby: Meet Tom Buchanan: Character Study
Students are given quotation from the novel on a handout and are asked to circle relevant phrases or words that indicate Tom's character. Students are thus asked to do close reading, critical thinking, and character evaluation.
