This document is used in a middle school classroom, where students have come up with the ideas and declared them fair. Included are a set of rules for students to keep, a document for students to sign that they agree to the rules (teacher can collect and keep in their file for documentation), and a letter to parents that comes back signed, when a student violates the agreed upon rules. FAIR, FAIR, FAIR (by students, for students), and CYA... ;)

Included is an EDITABLE cell phone policy. Your student and their parents/guardians will sign it. It includes proper times when students can be on their phones/devices and when they cannot. It also lays out detailed consequences. If you have devices in your classroom that students can use like Chrome books or iPads, you can add that in to the policy. I purchased a pocket holder that has numbers on it from Amazon and have it hanging on my filing cabinet with command hooks.

I tell students that I will give them extra credit (2 points) if they bring the letter and progress report back to me, signed, within 2-day of receiving it. Pink Slip - for missing homework

This is a strategy I got from Harry Wong (great presenter and author!). It's called a Pink Slip, and students fill it out whenever they do not have their homework. I don't listen to excuses, I just have them fill out the form, and I'll look at it later to see what their excuse is. I keep these on file, and they have come in handy for parent conferences (especially if a student is saying they didn't have time to do their homework due to sports or something or the sort).

Importance of learning science

Learning science is particularly important for students as it equips them with the essential knowledge and skills to make sense of the world around them. Science education is not just about memorizing facts. It fosters critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving abilities. These skills are not only useful in school but also in everyday life beyond the classroom.

Benefits of learning science

Learning science offers many benefits to students both in school and beyond. In fact, it helps students:

  • Question the world around them and seek evidence-based explanations
  • Cultivate their ability to observe, experiment, and analyze data
  • Nurture a sense of curiosity, awe, and wonder about the natural world
  • Understand natural phenomena and the laws that govern the universe

With a solid foundation in science, teachers can help empower students to think critically, solve problems, make informed decisions, and engage with the world around them in meaningful ways.

Teaching with science resources

One of the best parts about science class is all of the possibilities for hands-on, collaborative learning! Think: labs, experiments, inquiry-based activities, and design challenges. These activities encourage students to explore scientific concepts by observing, asking questions, and conducting investigations. Additionally, with small group centers, students can engage in group experiments, discussions, and projects that require them to collaborate, share ideas, and solve problems together.
