I then put the reference page into a sheet protector that goes into a durable, plastic folder for each child. (I keep the folders with the reference pages for next year's class so I don't have to copy from year to year)...

Retelling Rubric
I used this rubric to grade a written retelling of a story. I would choose any story, read it to the students (or if older, have them read silently) and have them write a retelling. By giving them the rubric as they write, they know what they need to include. I found a lot of students would 'grade' their work first, then turn it in to me.
