American Dream - CCSS Analysis of Roosevelt's 1936 Statue of Liberty Speech
This assignment has graphic organizers that address the rhetorical devices used in Roosevelt's speech. I use it with an American Dream unit to examine the "promise of the American Dream" for immigrants; we compare this analysis to the poem "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus. There is a part in one of the graphic organizers that asks students to cite textual evidence and make the connection.

Harlem Renaissance Work Stations
I like to begin this unit with clips from the Cotton Club and short documentaries on the Harlem Renaissance Movement. Playing music from this era really establishes the mood of this period.
There are 8 work stations, each takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. I put students into groups of 4-5. I explain how to do each work station before they begin. The students sit with their groups and I give each group one of the folders. While they work, I circulate around the room to assist.
