The Decimal Song

A few years ago, I had a conversation with students that led me to realize that many of them lack a basic understanding of the concept of a decimal (ie. it works like a fraction- it is less than one, or part of a whole). That led to me working this song into my math program. It is simple and catchy and hammers the point home, so that they won't (can't!) forget it. First, students fill in the blanks with lyrics from the video to see what they can do without a calculator. Then there are four sections of exercises or examples with three problems in each section. These include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimals. An answer key is given but no detailed examples so my suggestion is to use this as an intro

This is a song about how to add, subtract, multiply and divide with decimals to the tune of "Wide Awake" by Katy Perry. I'll watch students mouthing the words on tests and quizzes to help them remember. I've also gotten public performances when I've run into students outside of school.
