This lesson plan was designed to help students learn about some of the major themes of the Great Depression through music. Six songs have been carefully selected from the 1920s and 1930s. Background information is included for each song. Students are asked to complete a graphic organizer as they listen to each song. The Essential Question for this unit is: How did music help people resist what the Berlin Wall symbolized? Students will analyze 3 songs from the 1980s released as both a response and in resistance to the wall put up in Cold War Berlin. The songs included for analysis are - Nina's - 99 Red Balloons, Billy Joel's - Honesty, and Vladimir Vysotsky - I Don’t Like. Students will analyze important lyrics, each song's message, and the emotions conveyed by filling out the graphic organizer.
