This lesson uses two songs - Umbrella by Rhianna and Everything She Does is Magic by The Police. Students compare/contrast the symbol of the umbrella in both songs and attribute it to how it relates to the relationship between Rose and Troy in Fences. Additionally, there is a second page committed solely to symbolism in Fences. Great lesson! The kids love the music and comparing it to the text.
