Linear Equations: Water Park Project
In this high interest, extensive assignment, students are given a three part project broken into daily tasks. The project is designed to assess the students profieciency with linear equations. They must design a water park on a coordinate plane, identify points, calculate slope, write equations, solve for midpoint, use the distance formula, and explain their results in a reflection paper.

This activity applies a real life example of systems of equations. It proposes the question "Which restaurant would you eat at?". Students are given information about two different restaurants. They need to make predictions, write 2 linear equations, graph the linear equations, state the point of intersection (and explain what the intersection means), verify algebraically the point of intersection, and finally decide which restaurant they would eat at using all of the data from the activity.

Students are to be provided a bag of skittles. They are going to use proportions and ratios to determine if there are the same number/ratio of each color in all different sized bags.
I had students work in groups of 2 for this activity. Within the activity I broke it up into three different sections; a pre-lab, lab, and post-lab portion. Students make initial guesses/hypothesis, test out their theory, use proportions and ratios to analyze their results and graph data.
