Geometry Road Trip - Project Based Learning PBL

Follow along with Jacob and his family on their summer road trip! This project is a great end-of-the-year activity for your high school geometry students, as it reviews many topics that are taught throughout the year. It can also be broken up into the individuals tasks, to give as an end of unit assessment activity for each topic. This project is a great follow-up to many topics of geometry, including:Volume: Cones, pyramids, and cylindersCircles: Central arcs, inscribed angles, and segment len

Need a real world application to show students how useful inverses of sin, cosine, and tangent are? In this activity, students find missing angles in furniture construction designs using trig! The set includes 6 drawings with a total of 21 missing angles. Students will use their knowledge of trig ratios, inverses, and angle relationships (such as parallel lines cut by a transversal and complementary angles). Two versions are included:Large drawings showing each design on its own sheet One she

I like to call this activity Putt-Putt-Geometry. It is 9 glorious holes of trigonometry application! This works great as a Trig unit project, end of year project, or test review (maybe 1 or 2 holes for review). The students can work in groups, pairs, or individuals. If your students are not proficient with Trig, or you have not covered it yet, each hole can be done using the Pythagorean Theorem instead - simply tweak the directions a bit. I hope your students enjoy this as much as mine do!

Indirect Measurement Project: similar triangles, right triangle trigonometry

This is an outdoor project with 5 stations for students to acquire hands on experience with indirect measuring using different tools, right triangle trig, and similar triangles. Station 1: The mirror method Students use a mirror to create similar triangles and measure the height of a tall object. Station 2: The clinometer method Students use a clinometer and tangent to solve for the height of a tall object. Directions to make a quick, simple, and cheap clinometer are included. Station 3: T

Let your students explore their creativity while showing off what they have learned about different trig formulas. This is a great opportunity for students to apply these concepts that is relevant to their life and their interests. This is a crowd pleaser and gives you a chance to get to know your students more! This does include a presentation element and would take a couple of days to get through if you have a large class! *You could split students into groups or give this project individually

Right Triangle Trigonometry Project

If you are looking for a project to assign for either in class work or at home work this is it. This project should be done after students are able to set up and solve right triangle trigonometry problems, and they are familiar with angles of elevation. I worked on this assignment over the course of two days. On day 1, I had students create their own clinometers and practice using them (materials listed in resources). On day 2, we walked around the school campus together and they calculated the

This is one of my favorite projects of all time. Students make a tool to measure the angle of elevation from their eyeline and use it to measure the distance or height of things using trigonometry. I would bring students to the banks of the East River on the Brooklyn side and determine the height of the Chrystler building, or the distance to the Empire State. But you can also determine the height of the basketball hoop, the flagpole or the tallest tree on the school grounds. There are a lot

TRIG, Law of Sines and Law of Cosines Clue Project

Help! Timmy the Tiger has been murdered! This fun activity is a version of the classic game CLUE. Students complete practice problems of solving for angles and side lengths. This trigenometry activity involves solving using sine, cosine, and tangenet ratios as well as law of sines and law of cosines. When students correctly solve each section they get a CLUE sheet that has three questions they answer to determine the weapon, suspect and location of the murder. An answer key with all solutions wo

My honors geometry classes have completed the task in ~100-120 minutes. Here's how the activity works:1. Learn about the clinometer (I show a brief youtube video) and build your own.2. Leave the classroom, head outside or around the school (gym, auditorium,

There are six projects in this packet that I have used in Senior Math, Alegebra 2 and Precalculus. The first set of projects require students to use mirrors to create ratios for indirect measurement. Students also will extend the ratios to create equations (regression, correlation) and make predictions. The second set of projects require students to construct inclinometers to find the height of two large objects using trigonometry in two different ways. Also included are teacher notes, exten
