These engaging volume labs allow students to experiment and discover volume formulas of 3D solids. Help your students understand and remember where the formulas come from (and have fun while doing so)!The labs let students discover and make sense of formulas for the following 3D solids:Lab 1: PrismsLab 2: CylindersLab 3: PyramidsLab 4: ConesLab 5: SpheresIn each lab, students create 3D figures, hypothesize, and experiment. They see how the 3D solids relate to each other as they figure out their

Penny Boat Lab: Density, Buoyancy and Archimedes

Created by
Ray Byle
This is a one period activity/lab to teach students about the concept of density and Archimedes Principle, why things float. Students each get a piece of aluminum foil and design and make a boat. They then must calculate how many pennies it will carry before sinking, and then test it. This is an excellent one day STEM project that combines science, math, design and construction. Students will use the formula Density=Mass divided by Volume.

Engineering: Straw Rockets

Straw Rockets are quick, simple and lots of fun for the students. This STEM activity takes about one hour to assemble and one hour for outside launching fun. This engineering activity can be used from grade 3 through 12. This lesson could also be used in March for Women's History Month as an activity to go along with the Sally Ride story. The headings include: Teacher Notes, Introduction, Materials, Procedure, Patterns, Pictures and Conclusion Questions.

In this activity students will calculate the rate of the movement of Pacific Tectonic plate by examinining the formation of Hawaiian island chain. Students begin by determining ages of rocks found on each island using radiometric dating principle. Then they use scale maps to determine real world distances between islands. Finally they determine speed of motion from distance and time passed. This lab utilizes the claim, evidence and reasoning framework to guide students to synthesis of ideas and
